Case Background Bill Melton founded the company in 1981. The company started from the idea to provide a simple electronic cheque verification system. The old method was you write a cheque and the retailer would call a number to verify if your cheque is any good. Their service initially started in Hawaii. Then after a few years, they were dealing with credit cards and moved to the mainland. Today, if you see the little boxes where your credit card is swiped, Verifone started that idea. It has become a major part of today’s electronic commerce. They also coined the term “Transaction Automation” which is being used even by competitors.
