As the reform is developing deeply, China and other countries contact more and more frequently, especially in economic field. The trade, cooperation and communication between our country and other countries or areas have developed more and more vigorously. In order to adapt the new situation, the profession of secretary becomes new, and more and more appealing. The foreign secretary always works in the export-oriented enterprise, company or foreign, private, and joint ventures. He (she) needs to get in touch with people all over the world and serve them, so the work is international and important.
Let’s see how the Oxford English Dictionary expounds the secretary, it says that “1 one who is entrusted with private or secret matters; … 2 one who se office it is to write for another; esp. one who is employed to conduct correspondence, to keep records, and usually to transact various other business, for another person or for a society, corporation, or public body.” And the Webster’s Third New International Dictionary analyzes that “1 one who entrusted with the secrets or confidence of a superior; … 2 one employed to handle correspondence and manage routine and detail work for a superior; 3 a: an officer of a business concern who may issue notices and keep records of directors’ and stockholders’ meetings, oversee and preserve records of stock ownership and transfer and of other company affairs, and cooperate with counsel in supervision of the company’s legal interests; b: an officer of an organization or society responsible for its records and correspondence.”......
