随着科技的飞速发展和人们生活节奏的不断加快，社会环境瞬息万变，各大型工程项目所涉及的不确定因素日益增多，面临的风险也越来越多，风险所致损失规模也越来越大，这些都促使科研人员和实际管理人员从理论上和实践上重视对大型工程项目的风险管理。 世界项目管理大会把对项目的风险管理作为大会的四大主题之一，以及各种期刊上有关项目风险管理论文的不断增加， 都表明人们已极为重视对项目风险管理理论的研究。在实践上，现已涌现出不少新一代面向项目的企业——项目型公司[16]，国外甚至还出现了专门从事风险管理工作的所谓风险管理公司。
