I. General Introduction of English Idioms
1. Definition of Idiom
When you hear the sentences like “U.S. uses Britain as a Trojan horse to undermine the long-term aims of the European Union”, “There is a black sheep in every flock” or “The man I have called a miser heaped coals of fire on my head”, how could you understand the phrases “Trojan horse”, “black sheep” and “heap coals of fire on one’s head”. Of course, you can never comprehend the meanings of these phrases if you only accumulate the literal meaning of every single word. In these sentences, “Trojan horse”, “black sheep” and “heap coals of fire on one’s head” are representative English Idioms. English idioms are not strange to us. In our study or daily life, we could often mention or use English idioms with which we are familiar, but first of all, we should know what English idioms are.
2. Importance of English idioms
Idioms, or conventionalized multiword expressions, often but not always non-literal, are hardly marginal in English, though they have been relatively neglected in lexical studies of the language. This neglect is especially evident in respect of the functions of idioms. The apparent existence of idioms everywhere lets us realize the importance of them.
