In the old times, nature and society always depend on and struggle against each other for existence. The nineteenth century was full of change and contradiction. Be faced with all the contradictions, Hawthorne used religious sense of good and evil to examine all the social phenomena. He thought that the social contradiction should lay the blame on the confliction of the good and the evil in people's natural characters and solid characters. The scarlet letter is a novel about the contest between nature and society. Hester and her daughter represent the natural being's, while Dimmesdale and Roger Chillingworth represent the social being's.
