本文将对过去所提出的观点提出不同的看法，即：汉语中话题结构和关系结构(the relative construction)之间的关系，并非在句法的特征方面，而是在句法话题的语用解释方面得到最好的论述。本文研究结果显示：就跟句法话题有关的关系化relativization)来说，现在定义的句法话题在汉语中并不能表现出一致的语法功能。跟话题结构的句法特征无关，本文从语用角度将句法话题分为三种，即事例话题(instance topic)、框架话题(frame topic)和范围话题(range topic)，每一种都由涉及话题结构的特殊主题结构表现出来。我认为，本文提出的语用差异，在论述汉语话题结构是否以及如何转变为关系结构方面，起着重要的作用。
第二、三节分别简要讨论汉语话题结构，包括三种有句法依据的句法话题，还将简要讨论汉语的关系结构。第四节将证明，如认为句法话题具有一致的语法功能，那就无法对汉语的话题结构和关系结构之间的关系作出令人满意的论述。第五节将讨论对句法话题的语用解释，并且表明如何确定对句法话题的三种语用解释。第六节将根据第五节中列出的句法话题的语用差异，对汉语的话题结构和关系结构之间的关系作出简洁的论述。第七节是结论。
